To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many registered unemployed there were in Scotland on the latest date for which figures are available; and what was the equivalent figure for 1979. [35226]

In June 1995, seasonally adjusted claimant unemployment in Scotland was 197,600. The equivalent figure in 1979 was 138,500.

In April 1995, 70,100 people in Scotland had been claimant unemployed for more than a year.An equivalent figure for 1979 is not available.
