To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of total Japanese and American direct investment in the European Community came to the United Kingdom in each year since 1979. [35261]

The UK has attracted the lion's share of the stock of inward direct investment in the European Community. In 1993 the UK had about a third of all investment and over 40 per cent. of US and Japanese inward direct investment in the European Community.Comprehensive data for direct investment flows between 1983 and 1992 are published in the OECD's "International Direct Investment Statistics Yearbook 1994", which is available in the House of Commons Library.
