To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the latest estimate of savings to his Department's budget of the proposed decommissioning of the Royal Yacht Britannia. [34758]

As a result of the Government's decision to decommission HMY Britannia in 1997, her planned refit in 1996–97 will not be necessary; this will save some £17,000,000. In addition, Britannia's running costs of about £10,000,000 per annum will be saved.
