To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has received from the European Commission for the development of a common shipping policy; and what response he has made. [34931]

Over the last decade, the UK has supported Community legislation which seeks to ensure open access and fair competition on shipping routes both inside the Community and between member states and third countries. The Commission is currently preparing a strategy document on the future development of Community shipping policy which it intends to present to member states at the end of this year.
