To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what estimates were made of the cost of the work to be undertaken at the Atomic Weapons Establishment Aldermaston in support of the Trident programme before the work started. [37145]

Estimates were made of the manpower and materials costs that would be involved at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in the design, development and production of the UK Trident warhead. These were reflected in the budget for the establishment. It was also recognised that, as well as utilising existing AWE facilities, the programme would in due course make use of new facilities, coming on stream, in the normal course of renewal.
