To ask the Secretary of State for Health what guidelines are issued to NHS consultants in respect of voicing matters of public concern to the media; and in what circumstances trusts are authorised to take disciplinary action. [38360]

The national health service executive's "Guidance for staff on relations with the public and the media EL(93)51" clearly indicates the manner by which staff concerns about health care issues should be raised.Decisions about disciplinary matters are entirely for NHS employers.
