To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average weekly cost of imprisonment in each category of prison (a) in 1985, (b) in 1990 and (c) in the latest year for which figures are available. [37958]
Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the temporary Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

The attached table gives the average weekly net operating cost per inmate for the years 1984–85, 1989–90 and 1993–94, which is the latest year for which figures are readily available.
