21.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much was spent on official hospitality by his Department in 1994–95 and in 1995 to date. [36581]

During financial year 1994–95 my Department spent £4.867 million on official hospitality, and as at 1 October 1995 £2.14 million has been spent during the current financial year. These figures include expenditure incurred by the Ministry of Defence itself, by formations and establishments of the armed forces at home and abroad, and by individual officers occupying command and international appointments for which entertainment allowances are payable.
