To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what duty the United Kingdom, as a contracting party to the London convention, has to provide assistance to United Kingdom dependent territories in respect of the dumping of industrial waste in the marine environment. [37575]

I have been asked to reply.The UK ensures that the dependent territories act in accordance with those international obligations, including the London convention of 1972 which the UK has extended to them.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what reports he has received from the Bermudan Government in respect of their plans to dump asbestos waste in a marine site off Bermuda. [37569]

I have been asked to reply.The Governor's office in Bermuda is in close contact with us on Bermuda's plans to dispose of asbestos and has kept us fully informed of the options that the Bermudian Government are considering.
