To ask the President of the Board of Trade what proportion of the United Kingdom's gross domestic product is spent on research and development. [36097]

The UK's gross expenditure on R and D in 1994—the latest year for which figures are available—was 2.2 per cent. of GDP, as set out in "Science, Engineering and Technology Statistics 1996", a copy of which is held in the Library of the House.
