To ask the Secretary of State for International Development in what way the Department's research priorities have been modified in response to Technology Foresight. [17462]

The first phase of the Technology Foresight Programme did not address development issues to any significant extent. I have asked that the next phase be relevant to growing markets in the developing world. I hope that Foresight will broaden its agenda to accommodate the principles of the White Paper on International Development.

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what Technology Foresight priorities are being taken into account in the forward planning of her Department's scientific research programme. [17469]

My Department is working closely with the Office of Science and Technology to ensure that the principles espoused in the Government's White Paper on International Development (Cm 3789) are accommodated in the Technology Foresight programme. My hon. Friend the Under Secretary of State for International Development will be a member of the recently announced Ministerial group which will co-ordinate the Foresight programme.
