To ask the President of the Board of Trade what factors underlay her decision to invest in Rolls-Royce's new range of Trent engines; what steps had been taken by the company to secure this investment from the private sector; and if she will make a statement. [17375]

I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave the House on 13 November 1997, Official Report, column 626.The President of the Board of Trade did not handle the case for the DTI in order to avoid any potential conflict with her constituency interest. The case was handled for the DTI by me.
