To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the (a) total agreed complement of (i) full-time permanent staff, (ii) casual fixed term staff and (iii) part-time staff and (b) total number of (1) casual staff recruited, (2) permanent staff recruited, (3) voluntary early retirements by permanent staff, (4) dismissals of permanent staff, (5) dismissals of casual staff, (6) dismissals of part-time staff, (7) contracts that expired, (8) contracts that were extended, (9) staff on long term sick leave, (10) staff on maternity leave, (11) compulsory early retirements and (12) fundamental early retirements under fundamental economic review for Newry VAT Registration Unit of HM Customs and Excise. [holding answer 21 November 1997]: (a) The current agreed resource allocation is:

  • (i) 91 full-time permanent staff
  • (ii) 10 fixed term and 5 casual staff
  • (iii) 11 part-time staff

(b) In the twelve months since November 1996:

  • (1) 7 casual staff have been recruited
  • (2) 17 fixed term appointees have been converted to permanent and 1 by direct recruitment
  • (3) Nil—voluntary early retirements
  • (4) Nil—dismissals of permanent staff
  • (5) Nil—dismissals of casual staff
  • (6) Nil—dismissals of part-time staff
  • (7) 3 "casual" contracts expired
  • (8) 6 Fixed Term Appointments were extended
  • (9) 5 staff are currently on long term sick leave (exceeding 25 days)
  • (10) 12 women have had periods of maternity leave
  • (11) & (12) Nil—early retirements
