To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the cost to the Exchequer of the exemptions to the proposed restrictions on backdating of benefit claims which were announced by the Under-Secretary on 20 November 1997, Official Report, Standing Committee B, columns 426–29. [17608]

The estimated cost of the exceptions is around £24 million in a full year.
