To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will provide a breakdown, by rank, of the numbers of police officers (a) per police force and (b) in total, in each of the last 10 years. [67586]

Information in the form requested is available from 1991. For earlier years, only information on the total number of officers in each force is available. The details for each year between 1989 and 1998 are set out in the tables, which I have placed in the Library.
