To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many times he or his junior ministers have paid official visits to (a) the Czech Republic, (b) Poland, (c) Hungary, (d) Slovenia, (e) Estonia and (f) Cyprus since May 1997; and what was the purpose of each visit. [67699]

My right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary undertook visits to the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary in November 1997 and to Slovenia in November 1998.My predecessor as Minister of State for Europe, my hon. Friend the Member for Newcastle upon Tyne, North (Mr. Henderson), also undertook the following visits:

Slovenia—October 1997
Estonia—November 1997
Poland—April 1998
Czech Republic—April 1998.

The purpose of each visit was to discuss matters of bilateral interest.

No FCO Ministerial visits have been made to Cyprus since 1 May 1997.
