To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many GP vacancies there are at the latest available date; and how many there were in February (a) 2002 and (b) 2001. [97840]

In the 2002 general practitioner recruitment retention and vacancy survey, health authorities (HAs) reported 2,615 GP vacancies outstanding at any time during the period March 2001 to February 2002, compared with 2,464 in the period April 2000 to March 2001. There were four non-responding HAs in 2001–02 and two in 2000–01.
