To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will quantify the (a) increase in electricity generation required and (b) consequent implications for climate change arising from the replacement of Mark 1 Rolling Stock with units requiring extra power to be provided for their operation. [108951]

I understand that, for the Southern Region as a whole, demand on the grid supply is expected to increase from the existing maximum of 648 megawatts to about 800 megawatts. Supplying the extra power will be a matter for the electricity generating industry and will be subject to the relevant rules on environmental protection.
