To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on the proposed use of cloning by the Roslin Institute to research a cure for motor neurone disease. 111750]

I am aware of media reports that the Roslin Institute is proposing to conduct research into the treatment of motor neurone disease using stem cells derived from embryos created by cell nuclear replacement, known as therapeutic cloning. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, which licenses research involving human embryos, has advised me that it has yet to receive such a licence application.
