To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what percentage of children of compulsory school age attended independent schools in each of the last five years for which figures are available. [111682]

1 Pupils aged 5 to 15 on 31 August of the previous year.
2 The number of pupils in independent schools expressed as a percentage of the number of pupils in all schools.
3 Provisional numbers, based upon returns made to the Department by the end of March 2003. Number of pupils rounded to the nearest thousand.
