To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what proportion of carbon dioxide emissions was attributable to the steel industry in each of the last three years. [113321]

Emissions from the UK iron and steel industry accounted for some 5.9, 5.4 and 4.5 per cent, of UK carbon dioxide emissions in the years 1999, 2000 and 2001 respectively. The corresponding figure in 2002 was provisionally 3.8 per cent.
