To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department pursuant to his answer of 5 March 2003, Official Report, column 1096W, on prison inspectors, what the total pay costs incurred by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons were in each year since 1997. [113386]

The total pay costs for Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons since 1997 were as follows:

£
1997–98724,000
1998–99740,502
1999–2000886,247
2000–01896,000
2001–021,270,989
2002–031.568,475

The jump in pay costs between 2000–01 and 2001–02 reflects the creation of a third inspection team which the Government funded to meet significant increased demands on the inspectorate.
