Officer Training Costs

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what the cost of training (a) an RAF officer, (b) an RN officer, (c) an Army officer and (d) an officer in the Royal Marines was in 2001–02; if he will break down the total cost into component parts; what estimate he has made of training costs in each case in 2002–03; and if he will make a statement. The Defence Training Review estimated the total annual resource cost of individual training for all services at some £4.2 billion. However, the Ministry of Defence currently has no system for costing the components of individual training Following the Defence Training Review, the recently appointed Director General Training and Education is developing a consistent methodology for costing training outputs across Defence to provide a common baseline from which to assess the resource costs consumed in delivering training.
