To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many (a) doctors and (b) nurses from Malawi are working in the UK. [116408]

At 30 September 2001, census data in England recorded five doctors qualified in Malawi in the national health service hospital and community health services sector and none in general practice.The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registers all nurses who work in the United Kingdom and holds statistics for the number of overseas nurses who are accepted onto their register. Being placed on the NMC register does not equate to being employed.In the past five years, the number of nurses from Malawi that have been accepted on to the NMC register is:

Information on Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are matters for the devolved administrations. While the institutions in Northern Ireland are dissolved, responsibility rests with Ministers in the Northern Ireland Office.
