To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills (1) how many schools in Essex are running a deficit budget; [118751](2) if he will list the schools in Castle Point that are running a deficit budget, and the size of the deficit in each case. [118752]

The latest outturn statement published by Essex Local Education Authority shows that 21 schools ended the financial year 2001–02 with a deficit balance. Of these, two schools were in the Castle Point constituency: Leigh Beck Infant School and Nursery (— £6,915) and The Cornelius Vermuyden School (— £1,633).

Figures for the year ending 31 March 2003 are due to be published by authorities by 9 October 2003.
