The National Health Service counter fraud service, now the counter fraud and security management service, was formed in 1998, with the overall remit to tackle fraud and corruption within the NHS. It became operational in January 2000. No such figures were collated prior to its existence. These figures should be set in the context of increasingly effective counter fraud arrangements in the NHS and an increasing proportion of NHS fraud which is being identified and stopped.
