To ask the Secretary of State for Health what (a) hip replacement, (b) knee replacement, (c) cataract, (d) heart bypass and (e) varicose veins cost on average in 2002–03 (i) a private patient and (ii) the NHS; and what the difference was between the mid-private price and 60 per cent, of the NHS average cost. The Department does not collect information on the average cost of treatments provided to private patients.The national average costs for treatments within the national health service for 2002–03 are not currently available.
