To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much his Department spent on advertising in (a) 1995, (b) 1997 and (c) 2003. [133729]

Expenditure is recorded on a financial year basis and is shown in the following table.

The increase in expenditure since 2000–01 reflects additional road safety advertising in support of the Government's road safety strategy "Tomorrow's Roads—Safer For Everyone" published in March 2000.
