Commonwealth Institute

Volume 448: debated on Tuesday 4 July 2006

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much the Government contributed to the maintenance and running costs of the Commonwealth Institute building in each year between 1996 and 2000. (81167)

Figures for calendar years are not available. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) paid the Commonwealth Institute:

£1 million in the financial year 1996-97;

£1.1 million in 1997-98;

£600,000 in 1998-99;

£600,000 in 1999-2000.

The severance arrangements agreed between the FCO and the Commonwealth Institute in January 2000 provided for the payment of a further £8 million, about half of which was ring fenced for property maintenance.
