Vehicle Registration

Volume 448: debated on Tuesday 4 July 2006

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many people in Northern Ireland have been prosecuted as a result of the introduction of legislation on Statutory Off Road Notices for vehicles. (81670)

Statutory Off the Road Notification (SORN) was introduced in Northern Ireland in December 2002. However, the offence of failing to make a SORN declaration was superseded in December 2003 by the introduction of continuous registration which created the new offence of being the keeper of a vehicle which is neither licensed nor the subject of a SORN declaration. Between December 2002 and December 2003, 1,750 people were prosecuted for failing to make a SORN declaration.
