Housing Overcrowding

Volume 450: debated on Monday 16 October 2006

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what assessment has been made of the impact of statutory housing overcrowding on the educational attainment of children at GCSE level. (92072)

A research review ‘The Impact of Overcrowding on Health and Education: A Review of the Evidence and Literature, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, 2004’ found some indication that there is a relationship between overcrowding and children’s educational attainment, and between overcrowding and children’s social and emotional development. However, the research evidence on the effects of overcrowding is limited and often confounded by other factors, such as poverty.
