Power Stations

Volume 450: debated on Tuesday 24 October 2006

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when the Government will announce decisions allowing new power stations to be constructed. (95676)

Under section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989, the Secretary of State decides whether or not to grant permission for construction for a power station in England and Wales of above 50MW (or of above 1MW in the territorial sea) of any type, following an application being submitted to him.

It is difficult to predict the length of this process, since the time taken to decide an application depends on a number of factors, including the complexity of the project, environmental factors, the views of persons affected by the proposed development and whether there is to be a public inquiry.
