Volume 450: debated on Wednesday 25 October 2006

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what reports she has received regarding recent clashes between rival militia groups in Somalia; and if she will make a statement. (96186)

We are concerned about reports that forces of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) continue to pursue armed conflict in Somalia. We urge all parties, in Somalia and across the region, to commit to dialogue and reject confrontation. We also urge the UIC and the Transitional Federal government to remain committed to the agreement reached in Khartoum earlier this year. Along with our international partners, we believe that the Transitional Federal Charter and the institutions created under it are the only existing mechanisms for restoring democratic governance in Somalia.
