West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust

Volume 450: debated on Wednesday 25 October 2006

I stand here this evening, on the eve of the board decision on the future of West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust, to deliver this petition on behalf of Dacorum hospital action group and the residents of my constituency.

The petition of the residents and workers of Dacorum district of Hertfordshire declare the current consultation of West Herts Hospital Trust is flawed and seeks to damage our local health service. It overlooks the fact that Hemel Hempstead Hospital is a modern hospital and has the benefit of the adjoining Paradise site which is in public ownership. To move acute services and maternity to an already overcrowded Watford Hospital, which is due for demolition and for rebuilding, will be extremely detrimental to all the people of West Herts. Furthermore, Hemel Hempstead has the largest population of any town in Hertfordshire and has been declared a growth area. The petitioners therefore request the House of Commons to urge the Government to call in this current flawed consultation of West Herts Hospital Trust. And the petitioners remain, etc.

The second petition, which in combination with the first accumulates some 15,000 signatures, reads:

The petition of the residents of Dacorum and others declares the petitioners’ serious concerns about the plans of West Herts hospital NHS trust to cut health provision, including the removal of all acute services from Hemel Hempstead hospital. The petitioners further declare that these cuts aim to generate financial savings and do not take into account the clinical expertise needed…The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urge the Secretary of State to use all of her powers to reverse any proposed plans, and for her to visit Hemel Hempstead Hospital at her earliest opportunity and address the residents and their concerns. And the petitioners remain, etc.

To lie upon the Table.

My petition further relates to concerns about the cuts in West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust, in advance of the meeting tomorrow. The signatures were collected in Berkhamsted high street on 23 September.
