Unaccompanied Minors

Volume 451: debated on Wednesday 1 November 2006

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans his Department has to carry out returns of unaccompanied minors to (a) the Congo, (b) Vietnam and (c) Angola; what assessment has been made of the risk of such children becoming the victims of trafficking; and if he will make a statement. We are developing a returns programme to a number of countries for unaccompanied children who have been refused asylum in the UK. This is to ensure that young people with no basis of stay here can be returned to their countries of origin in a safe, sustainable way. We have made clear that we would not return any young person unless we are confident that safe, adequate reception arrangements are in place, that their return is not in breach of our international obligations and that this is in the best interests of the young person concerned.
