Conventional Weapons Review

Volume 453: debated on Monday 27 November 2006

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will bring forward measures to ban the use of cluster munitions as a response to the Convention on Conventional Weapons Review. (102375)

In response to a UK proposal at the recent Certain Conventional Weapons Review Conference we achieved consensus with the major users and producers of cluster munitions within the Certain Conventional Weapons Convention to urgently address their humanitarian impact. Cluster munitions are permitted under international humanitarian law and UK forces use them strictly in accordance with international humanitarian law. The UK plans to phase out and destroy so-called dumb cluster munitions by the middle of the next decade.
