European Union

Volume 455: debated on Wednesday 10 January 2007

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, pursuant to the answer of 4 December 2006, Official Report, column 18W, on the European Union, whether the European Commission has provided the Government with any information on the cost of European regulation to UK businesses. (108556)

The European Commission does not provide the Government with such information. However, the Government have provided the European Commission with data from their administrative burdens measurement exercise to assist with the development of its strategy to measure and set a target to reduce administrative burdens in the European Union. The results of Government’s measurement exercise were published on 11 December 2006 alongside 500 simplification proposals which, based on the data, should lead to an estimated reduction in administrative burdens of £2 billion.
