Nuclear Weapons

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what assessment he has made of the potential impact of the use of nuclear weapons on climate change. (115894)

We have monitored discussion in the academic arena on the possible effects of a large scale nuclear exchange on the world's climate but we have not undertaken any such assessments ourselves. Most recently, a study was presented to the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in December 2006 on the subject. This found that even a small scale regional nuclear war could disrupt the global climate for a decade or more.
