UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

Volume 456: debated on Thursday 1 February 2007

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when the UK ratified the Protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography. (111418)

[holding answer 25 January 2007]: The United Kingdom has not ratified the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.

The Government made clear that, before we could ratify the Optional Protocol, it would be necessary to conduct a thorough assessment to ensure that the measures needed to comply with it had been established. This assessment has been carried out and we are now in a position to commence the process of ratification. Steps are being taken to ensure this process is commenced as soon as possible.
