The National Statistician has been asked to reply to your recent question asking, pursuant to the answer of 30 January 2007, Official Report, column 232W, on mortality statistics, how many people died as a result of a stroke in each (a) strategic health authority and (b) primary care trust in (i) 2003, (ii) 2004, (iii) 2005 and (iv) 2006. The table attached provides the number of deaths where stroke was the underlying cause of death in each (a) strategic health authority and (b) primary care organisation¹ in England, the total number in Wales, and in England and Wales combined, for 2003 to 2005 (the latest year available). A copy has been placed in the House of Commons Library.

The totals given here for England and Wales are slightly lower than the corresponding figures given in the answer of 30 January. Figures broken down by NHS organisation differ from national figures in excluding deaths of people not usually resident in England and Wales, and are based on the year of registration of death rather than the year of occurrence.
