The total number of national insurance numbers in issue at 31 December 2006 was approximately 76 million. There are approximately 16.5 million national insurance numbers in issue where the person is deceased. These numbers are retained which means there are approximately 59.5 million in issue to adults, not all of whom will be resident in the United Kingdom.
