Midwives: Manpower

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what proportion of the work force of the NHS in England, expressed in terms of (a) headcount and (b) whole-time equivalent, was represented by midwives in each year since 1997. (122644)

The proportion of the national health service work force represented by midwives since 1997 is shown in the following table. Between September 1997 and September 2005, the number of midwives employed in the NHS has increased by 2,423 (10.8 per cent.).
