Prisoners: Foreigners

Volume 459: debated on Tuesday 1 May 2007

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department for how many foreign prisoners in prisons in England and Wales no country of origin was known on 31 March. (132930)

At the end of February 2007, the last date for which the information is available, there were 879 out of a total prison population of 79,582 (or about 1 per cent. of the prison population) prisoners detained in all prisons in England and Wales whose nationality was listed on the IT system as “unrecorded”. This figure includes instances where the prisoners’ nationality is unknown, where they have refused to give it, and where they are stateless.

The figure has been drawn from administrative IT systems, which, as with any large scale recording system, are subject to possible errors with data entry and processing.
