Bereavement Benefits: Eligibility

Volume 461: debated on Monday 18 June 2007

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions if he will commission a study to find out how many people are eligible for bereavement benefits. (143763)

The Department for Work and Pensions is keen to ensure that people claim their full entitlement to state benefits. The Bereavement Benefit Scheme is well known and has been in operation for some time with a high public profile. We are, therefore, confident that the Department’s publicity of the scheme is sufficient to alert individuals who have been bereaved.

For this reason we do not believe that the proposed study is necessary.
