This information is not held centrally. The Police Service in England and Wales has benefited from a significant increase in resources over a sustained period. On a like-for-like basis Government grant and central spending on services for the police will have increased from £6.2 billion in 1997-98 to £11.0 billion in 2007-08; an increase of nearly £4.8 billion or a cash increase of 77 per cent. (in real terms over 39 per cent.). Every police authority has received its fair share of resources. The use of these resources is an operational matter for each chief officer to determine in the light of local and competing priorities.
