To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs for what reasons the office of the UK Permanent Representative to the EU, Strasbourg and UK Delegation to the Council of Europe Strasbourg do not share offices; and what the (a) cost of each office, (b) numbers of staff in each office and (c) floor space of each office was in the latest period for which figures are available. The UK Permanent Representation to the EU does not have an office in Strasbourg. The office space used by UK officials is owned by the European Parliament and this is made available to the UK at no cost.

The UK Delegation to the Council of Europe occupies a building of 327 square metres in a residential area of Strasbourg. The office staff consists of five UK based staff and three locally recruited full-time staff plus one part time. The rental of the office in financial year (FY) 2006-07 was £31,181. The office running costs (utilities, rates, repairs and refurbishments) were £33,199 in FY 2006-07.
