Volume 464: debated on Thursday 11 October 2007

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment HM Revenue and Customs has made of the threat to the UK, of the smuggling of (a) firearms, (b) other items subject to an import prohibition, through uncanalised yacht and pleasure craft traffic; and if he will make a statement. (156566)

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what assessment HM Revenue and Customs has made of the threat presented to the UK of smuggling firearms and other items subject to an import prohibition through uncanalised yacht and pleasure craft traffic. (156027)

Yachts and pleasure craft represent a very small fraction of the vehicles entering and leaving the UK which HM Revenue and Customs deals with on a regular basis. HMRC assesses the threat posed by this form of transport as part of its overall approach to tackling smuggling.

HMRC is an intelligence-led organisation which works in partnership with other customs and law enforcement agencies, both within and outside the UK, to identify and tackle the threats posed, and deploys its resources accordingly.
