To ask the Secretary of State for Health what estimate he has made of the number of individuals who were in receipt of controlled drugs through prescription in each of the last five years; and if he will make a statement. (159442)

It is not possible to say how many people were prescribed controlled drugs, as the data are not collected by individual. The number of national health service prescription items for controlled drugs dispensed in the community in England is shown in the following table.
