Terrorist Suspects: Detention

17. To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what the reasons were for the increases in periods of detention before charge for terrorist suspects introduced in each of the last 10 years. (167497)

The increases in the maximum period of pre-charge detention for terrorist suspects in the last 10 years have been agreed by Parliament on the basis that they were needed for operational reasons.

20. To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent representations she has received on proposals to increase the maximum period of detention of terrorist suspects without charge beyond 28 days. (167500)

We have undertaken an extensive consultation on extending the maximum period of pre-charge detention for terrorist suspects and have received representations from a range of stakeholders, including the police, civil liberty groups, the judiciary and wider community groups.
