To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many registered midwives were not practising in each year since 1997; and if he will make a statement. (165443)

This information is not collected centrally. However, the annual work force census on 31 September 2006 showed there were 24,469 qualified midwives working in the NHS in England, an increase of 2,084 (9 per cent.) since 1997.
